Military investigates Bawku - 11/25/2009 - Bookmark and Share

Citi News inquiries have revealed that One Captain Fred Abrokwa who is believed to have led an Army deployment at Bawku has been summoned before the Military High Command for questioning while the Upper East Regional Security Council has instituted an investigation into the alleged stripping of some civilians by some Military personnel in Bawku.

Information available indicates that the soldiers really stripped two suspects naked and paraded them through the streets of Bawku. In spite of denials by the top echelon of the Armed Forces, new information suggests that the incident took place and was recorded both on video and by still cameras.

Several pictures have been released to a section of the media, some of which appeared in the Daily Guide of Monday, November 23. One of the photos depicted two men sitting on the floor, stark naked with soldiers standing over them - one pointing a gun dangerously to the mouth of one of the suspects.

One of the suspects is photographed crying while a soldier stands treacherously over him.

Responding to latest information of the video recordings, Col. EWK Nibo, the Head of Public Affairs of the Armed Forces told Citi News that the video will be compared with whatever report Capt Abrokwa submits about the Incident and the appropriate action will be taken accordingly.

“As far as the Military is concerned, we have asked the officer to submit his report and that report would be studied and then the command will decide what will happen next. If we watch the video and see exactly what has happened, that will be juxtaposed against the report that the officer presents and then from there we will know what will happen.” He said.

When News broke first about the reported stripping of suspects, officials from both the Army and the Regional Security Council condemned the media for exaggerating the facts of the case.

Col Nibo has however assured Ghanaians that nobody will be shielded if found culpable of abusing the rights of the suspects.

“If it did happen, the military command will take the appriopriate action.” He said.

Meanwhile the Military High Command has dismissed reports that Private Seth Gokah, one of the suspects in the Mobilla murder trial is on Official Military assignment outside the country.

Early last week when the three Soldiers being held in connection with the Mobilla Murder trial were due to appear before court, only two did. Private Gokah was reported to have broken jail and fled while in custody at Michel Camp.

Meanwhile new information has it that Private Gokah has been sent on assignment out of the country at the behest of a top National Security Official against the caution of the Military High Command. But Col EWK Nibo Head of Military Public Relations said Private Gokah has simply run away and he is being looked for.

“As far as we are concerned he has escaped. They are looking for him; I don’t know where that story is coming from that he has been sent. Why would one of them be sent and the two would be left? He queried.
